Westerville Data Center Project Picks DRS

June 23, 2011 (Youngstown, OH)DRS LLC will manage a new data center in Westerville that gives small to medium-sized companies access to the tools of big business.

Westerville officials and some 75 residents joined DRS executives to break ground Tuesday on the 16,000-square-foot "WeConnect "building projected to cost $6 million.

"It should be up and running in six months," said the CEO of DRS, Mike Meloy. It's an effort to offer affordable information technology (IT) solutions to Westerville businesses, residents and other entities, he says, by building a community data center and fiber optic broadband infrastructure.

Already DRS and its marketing partner, Palo Creative, both based in Leetonia, are courting Internet and cloud computing service providers and other IT companies to set up shop in the data center and offer their services to the community for more competitive rates, Meloy said. More carriers connected to the network means more choices for companies, "and choice drives down price," he said.

"One of the reasons Westerville's doing this is to entice businesses to come to the community, so they've put out a carrot to the business community," Meloy said. "They will be in this facility competing for the business of the community."

The center is intended to create an "attractive, competitive environment, in which businesses can actually take advantage of the competitiveness between carriers," Meloy said. While such carriers typically go after Fortune 500 companies, "this allows smaller businesses to get involved in these types of projects" when they wouldn't otherwise be able, making it a community data center, he said.
