Port Authority adds Free Strands of Fiber Optic Cable

July 5, 2011 (East Liverpool, OH)The Columbiana County Port Authority was able to acquire two more strands of fiber optic cable for free, which they will make available to an information technologies tenant.

The port authority board agreed at its recent meeting to amend its lease with the ACCESS Council to acquire two more strands of fiber optic cable, which is in addition to the two strands it already owns.

ACCESS is a consortium of local schools that joined together to develop a fiber optic network that brought high-speed Internet to schools here and in Mahoning County. The port authority purchased two strands of cable from ACCESS for $1.2 million in 2004 and leased it to an information technologies (IT) firm that moved into the port authority's industrial park in Leetonia.

The contract with the original tenant was dissolved two years ago, and the port authority found a replacement in DRS LLC, another IT company. Port Authority CEO Tracy Drake said DRS indicated recently it would like to have access to an additional two strands of fiber optic cable to provide enhanced services to its business clients and to market to new customers.

"It will allow DRS to offer more robust services at no additional cost," he said. "It allows DRS to increase what they can offer" in the form of increased backup capability, volume and redundancy.
