Omnicity, DRS and CCPA to Bring Broadband to Rural Columbiana County
February 1, 2010 (Rushville, Indiana) – Omnicity Corp, an Indiana-based wireless broadband provider, has agreed to work with DRS LLC and the Columbiana County Port Authority to deploy wireless broadband services to rural Columbiana areas. The goal of the partnership is to bring much-needed broadband services to area residents and businesses at affordable rates.
Greg Jarman, CEO of Omnicity stated – “We are very excited to work with DRS and CCPA, they are both well-positioned quality partners”. Jarman added, “We have already begun studies on towers and terrain to determine the deployment approach”.
Omnicity provides wireless broadband service to 6,000 rural subscribers in Indiana and has begun growing the network into Ohio through acquisition of rural wireless providers and through traditional build out.
According to Tracy Drake, CEO, Columbiana Port Authority, even though the Columbiana area is located in the fourth-largest population market in the U.S., over half of the county’s population doesn’t have reliable internet access. Drake says that The Port Authority has recently invested over four million dollars to acquire rights in a 260 mile regional fiber optic network and to build an operations center that will serve as a hub for these type services.
“We are excited to have worked out this relationship to bring a quality provider like OMNICITY to the area,” says Drake, “This is something we’ve been working towards for quite some time.”
In the recent memorandum of understanding signed by the three companies: DRS will provide for the collocation, connectivity, and storage needs of the project as they arise, Omnicity has agreed to provide the build out of the infrastructure, marketing and customer support services, and the CCPA will assist with facilities, fiber access and regional support for launching of the services.
